Maybe I don’t hop on the Corel website or twitter often enough, but I only found out about the release of CorelDRAW earlier this week from an application pop-up. I purchased most of the upgrades skipping a couple versions here and there all the way up to X8, which I purchased on March 10th – not long after the ads for it started popping up in my previous version.

Like I said, I just found this out this week and I wasn’t happy. So, I hop on web chat with Corel support and ask about it. The sales manager I was speaking to kept trying to up-sell me on this for some reason. He did a great job of pissing me off, and while I did my best to maintain my composure on the phone with him, I was cussing up a storm after I got off the line. Back when I purchased v7. They didn’t have any copies of the 7.

Corel was happy to send me a new boxed copy of v8. They didn’t even ask me to send in the copy of v7. Now I guess I’m waiting for someone one step further up the call-center chain to call me back and give me the runaround. To be honest, nothing really “speaks to me” in the new version, but I usually find something new in every version that I like over the previous one. I genuinely like the product, but this interaction really drives home the point that they no longer consider me a customer, I’m just a source of revenue to be tolerated at best. Maybe I need to look elsewhere for my design software needs.

Maybe I just keep running the current version in a VM for the next 28 years. Maybe I stop recommending this product to my peers. To be clear, I’m not an apologist for Corel Corp, and the release of completely took me by surprise. My first thoughts were along the lines of, “Ugh! Really unlikely to see any bug fixes or maintenance releases of X8 now! I, too, genuinely like the product, but I don’t go back with it as far as you do.
